Introduction to Crochet
Before starting, you will need a few basic supplies:
- A crochet hook (size depends on your yarn)
- Yarn (choose a medium weight yarn for beginners)
- Scissors
- A yarn needle (for weaving in ends)
You would also need to get familiar with some crocheting stitch terms:
Stitch | Difficulty | Description | Common Use |
---|---|---|---|
Chain (ch) | Beginner | Basic foundation stitch | Almost all projects |
Single Crochet (sc) | Beginner | Short, tight stitch | Amigurumi, Coasters |
Half Double Crochet (hdc) | Beginner | Slightly taller stitch | Scarves, Blankets |
Double Crochet (dc) | Intermediate | Tall stitch | Shawls, Blankets |
Slip Stitch (sl st) | Beginner | Very short stitch | Joining rounds, edges |
Treble Crochet (tr) | Advanced | Very tall stitch | Lace, Decorative Patterns |
Here are some basic steps to get you started with crochet:
1. Making a Slip Knot
Start by making a slip knot on your crochet hook. This will be the starting point for your crochet project.
2. Creating a Your First Slip Stitch
Alright with your dominate hand, hold the crochet hook and with your other hand, hold the yarn. To make the chain stitch, wrap the yarn from the back to the front of the hook. Then pull the yarn through creating your first slip stitch. This is where the stitch will start to grow from.
3. Working the First Row
You would then continue to repeat the process of wrapping the yarn around the hook and pulling it through the loop on the hook to create more chain stitches. You would do this until you have the desired length you want for your project.
4. Turning Your Work
Once you have completed the first row of your chain stitches, you would then need to turn your work around to work on the next set of row. Continue to repeat the process of looping the yarn around the hook and pulling it through.
5. Continuing Your Project
Continue working rows of stitches, by following the same process as described above. You can also experiment with different stitch also mention above.
6. Finishing Your Project
Once you have finished, you need to close off your project. To do this, you would first cut the yarn, leaving a tail. You would then create a slip stitch as the final stitch to close the project. After that pull the excess yarn to tighten it and cut off any extra yarn.
Congrats! You completed you first project!
